Festivals
The summer calendar in Vegas comes stacked with shindigs of every description—including a mighty appropriate one for Mercato diners, the 39th Annual San Gennaro Feast (May 9 to 13), an Italian-American bash honoring the patron saint of Naples, Saint Gennaro. Revel in great beer and great music, meanwhile, at the Springs Preserve’s Brews & Blues Festival (May 18) or the supersized spectacle and DJ beats of the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway (May 18 to 20). Then there’s Life is Beautiful (September 21 to 23), which turns 19 blocks of Downtown Las Vegas into one world-class festival of art, music, and togetherness.

Vegas plays host to some top-quality museums, and the variety of subject matter they represent is remarkable. On a hot summer afternoon, it’s a treat to slip into one of these houses of learning—which, we’ll emphasize, are anything but dry. Delve into the history of organized crime at the Mob Museum, fraternize with prehistoric beasties at the Las Vegas Natural History Museum, pay your respects to Vegas signs of yesteryear at the Neon Museum & Boneyard and to classic rides of the silver screen at the Hollywood Cars Museum, greet the lifelike celebs at Madame Tussaud’s Las Vegas, and wander the expansive galleries of the Las Vegas Art Museum—to name but a few options.

Taking in a show is as quintessential a Vegas activity as taking to a casino, of course, and needless to say the live entertainment’s year-round. Cirque Du Soleil, Blue Man Group, Jennifer Lopez at the AXIS at Planet Hollywood, Celine Dion at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Wayne Newton at Windows at Bally’s, Boyz II Men at the Mirage’s Terry Fator Theatre—well, there’s an onstage offering for every taste and mood.
Outdoor Adventure
Escape the city and take in the scenic glories of its desert backyard! Close at hand are the Red Rocks Conservation Area, Lake Mead National Recreation Area (including the Black Canyon of the Colorado River, an awesome paddling destination), and the forests and meadows of Mount Charleston in the Spring Mountains, a wonderful place to beat the summer heat. You can even zip out to one of the world’s genuine natural wonders—Arizona’s Grand Canyon—on a day tour by helicopter, airplane, or bus.
