MIAMI

Italian Restaurant near Miami Book Fair

In November, Miami will once again be hosting one of the largest and most prestigious bibliophilic gatherings in the nation: the Miami Book Fair International! If you’ll be in town for the occasion—whether to attend readings, buy books, or maybe take the stage yourself!—consider this a warm invitation to bring your appetite to Mercato della Pescheria during the festival week.

Introducing the Miami Book Fair International

The Miami Book Fair launched in 1984, a collaboration of Miami Dade College President Eduardo J. Padrón and Mitchell Kaplan, who owned Books & Books in Coral Gables. The first go-round landed some prestigious authors—James Baldwin among them—and drew close to 25,000 attendees: success right out of the gates. Subsequent years managed to keep the high literary standard going, with everyone from Allen Ginsberg to Maya Angelou making appearances.

As this New York Times retrospective on the festival from 2013 notes, the modern Miami Book Fair International is considered “the largest and by nearly all accounts the most diverse public literary event in the United States.”

Better than 400 wordsmiths from across the country and across the world—bestsellers and up-and-comers alike—attend the fair’s Festival of Authors, while the Street Fair serves as a multi-day outdoor bonanza for booksellers, publishers, casual buyers, and heavy-duty collectors. There are kids events over in Children’s Alley, comic-book and graphic-novel deep dives in Comix Galaxy, live music, and much more.

The weeklong Book Fair itself, meanwhile, isn’t all: These days, the festival hosts readings and other events across the calendar.
